Start with the position

Margin is the amount required to support a leveraged position. It is not a complete description of the position’s exposure. ASIC Moneysmart explains that forex leverage can magnify both gains and losses because price movements affect an exposure larger than the initial amount committed.

Read the account conditions

Locate the documents describing margin requirements, any additional-funding process and automatic close-out conditions. Record where those requirements depend on the instrument or account. This is a document review, not a suggested leverage level or a position-sizing recommendation.

Keep the platform labels distinct

Balance, equity, used margin and available margin are different account concepts. Read the platform’s definitions before interpreting its account display. cTrader’s conditions documentation describes stop-out behavior and makes clear that its relevant settings depend on the broker. Avoid transferring a threshold from a software example to a real account.

Document a question before acting on a number

If an account display is unclear, keep the timestamp, instrument and relevant account reference with the question. Use the current platform documentation and independently obtained support channel. A larger available-margin figure does not establish that additional exposure is suitable or that losses are limited to the opening margin.
